Felipe Aguirre: A Reconstruction of the Concept of hermeneía (‘performance’) in Ancient Greek Music

Although the notion of hermenéia in Ancient Greece is primarily associated with the field of literary criticism, it is possible to reconstruct the meaning this concept held in relation to music. Certain sources (notably Plato and Pseudo-Plutarch) highlight its importance in understanding the deeper implications of artistic creation and performance. This presentation, after examining the semantic characteristics of the term within its rhetorical and literary context, aims to address the essential aspects of musical ἑρμηνεία. In this sense the term is understood not only as the set of technical skills required for the practical mastery of a given instrument (such as the aulos or the kithára) but also as the artist’s capacity to act as a ‘mediator’ (ερμηνεύς) between the created work and the audience. This conception unveils a nuance still relevant—and perhaps more necessary than ever—in contemporary musical performance. It moves the performer’s activity away from the common idea of mímēsis as an aesthetic experience and positions it closer to the contemplative—and ultimately irrational—state characteristic of religious experience.
L’arte delle muse - tra ricostruzione e performance
Questo studio esplora l’antico concetto di mousikē téchnē come unità originaria di parola, canto e danza nella cultura greca classica. Attraverso l’analisi di fonti filosofiche e musicali (Aristosseno, Aristide, Platone, Plutarco, tra gli altri), si indaga la natura performativa e simbolica del gesto, della voce e del ritmo, nonché la loro funzione mediatrice nell’espressione estetica e rituale. Il contributo propone una rilettura della musica antica come esperienza integrale del corpo, dell’anima e del pensiero, che richiede il recupero del legame tra arte, conoscenza e visione del mondo nella tradizione ellenica.
This study explores the ancient concept of mousikē téchnē as an original unity of speech, song, and dance in classical Greek culture. Through an analysis of philosophical and musical sources (Aristoxenus, Aristides, Plato, Plutarch, among others), it examines the performative and symbolic nature of gesture, voice, and rhythm, as well as their mediating function in aesthetic and ritual expression. The paper proposes a reinterpretation of ancient music as an integral experience of body, soul, and thought—one that demands a renewed understanding of the connection between art, knowledge, and worldview in the Hellenic tradition.

Este trabajo examina el papel del piano en la música de cámara desde una perspectiva integradora. Más allá del rol de acompañante, el piano se presenta como un agente discursivo con voz propia, que dialoga activamente con los demás instrumentos. A través de ejemplos del repertorio romántico y moderno, se propone una lectura en la que el pianista asume funciones estructurales, narrativas y simbólicas, revalorizando su presencia escénica y expresiva dentro del conjunto. El estudio subraya la importancia de la escucha colectiva y la flexibilidad interpretativa en la práctica camerística contemporánea.
This paper explores the role of the piano in chamber music through an integrative perspective. Beyond its traditional role as accompanist, the piano emerges as a discursive agent with its own voice, engaging in active dialogue with the ensemble. Drawing on examples from the Romantic and modern repertoire, the study proposes a reading in which the pianist takes on structural, narrative, and symbolic functions—redefining their expressive and scenic presence. It emphasizes the importance of collective listening and interpretive flexibility in today’s chamber music performance practice.

Today marks the final lecture of the 14th Course on Classical Thought and Culture, delivered by Felipe Aguirre, orchestral conductor trained at the Vienna Conservatory, with a talk entitled “Between Dionysian Roar and Apollonian Harmony: Music and Worldview in Ancient Greece.” This is Felipe Aguirre’s first visit to Ibiza, and he will perform live music using reconstructed instruments from Ancient Greece, such as the lyre and the aulos.
